The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Chairman of North Eastern Council (NEC), Shri Paban Singh Ghatowar will welcome Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh tomorrow at Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) in Guwahati. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the physical facility of the state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator with Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) and SRS/SRT, commissioned with grants-in-aid from NEC and Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
During the visit, Dr. Manmohan Singh will also be briefed about the Revitalization Project Phase-IV (RPP-IV) for up-gradation of Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute to a centre of excellence at a total cost of Rs.197.49 crores.
Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute was established on 18th November, 1973 and Government of India recognized it as a Regional Cancer Centre in year 1980. Later on, Government of Assam took over the Management of the Institute from the Board of Trustee in 1986 while retaining its autonomy. The institute is being developed as an institution of excellence and has all the modern infrastructure facilities and experts for cancer treatment.
The Institute has a 200 bedded Hospital spread over a plot of land measuring 15 acres. It has, in addition, a 100 bedded Guest House for ambulatory patients. About 8500 new patients and 50,000 old patients visit the Institute every year. Considering the fact that the number of trained technical staff in the field of Oncology is limited in the North Eastern Region, the Institute has also started various teaching and training programmes in this field.
RPP-IV is being implemented by the NEC, DAE and the Government of Assam (GoA) during the period from April, 2012 to March, 2017. In this connection, the Fourth Tripartite Agreement has been signed by NEC, DAE and GoA. The total share of NEC, DAE and GoA will be Rs.122.40 crores, Rs. 39.41 crores and Rs. 35.59 crores, respectively. This revitalization project- Phase-IV, at a total cost of Rs.197.49 crores, will be implemented from April, 2012 to 31st March, 2017 by NEC, DAE & Government of Assam.
